Standby power is the electrical consumption of appliances while not performing their function. Usually the standby power of each single appliance is fairly low. However, the accumulated household standby power is substantial due to the huge number of appliances constantly connected to the electricity grid. Although new standards limit the standby power consumption of appliances, the accumulated household standby power today exceeds 10% of the total electrical power consumption.

Worldwide household standby energy waste shown as rising power consumption

An Offline-Power-Supply is an element which converts the AC input from the power line into low voltage DC required for the operation of the electronic circuits in appliances.

Significant design efforts are invested in order to minimize the standby power. Yet, most of the power consumed in the standby mode is wasted within the Offline-Power-Supply itself. For example: the power consumption of an Offline-Power-Supply in a typical appliance is substantially higher than the power consumed by the appliance’s LED indicator.

Fundamental observation

Compared to all other electrical appliances, an IoT device has a unique profile of power consumption. Its standby time is extremely long in respect to its operating time. When powering the IoT through an Offline-Power-Supply, it includes additional power consumption of the Offline-Power-Supply itself, resulting in very poor energy efficiency.

IoT device power use over time: low standby demand with brief active periods

The solution

Eta-Bar offers an innovative, patented Offline-Power-Supply technology that targets IoT devices. Eta-Bar Offline-Power-Supply reduces the standby power well below the entire existing standby power standards. It is also ready for extra strict standards that may be imposed in the foreseeable future. In addition, the new Offline-Power-Supply reduces costs, minimizes footprint and significantly increases reliability, compared with any existing solution.

Most energy wasted in existing supplies can be saved with Eta-Bar’s technology

Advantages

Higher reliability: reliability of dozens of years, maintenance-free, suitable for infrastructureHigher energy efficiency: saves energy, zero standby power, meets all standby standardsLowest parts count: cheaper, smaller and more reliableFree of electromagnetic radiation: inductorless, meets EMC standards, can integrate in a SOC
